Signed Edward Henry Potthast (American, 1857 – 1927). ‘Untitled’, view of a new england seashore. Oil painting on board, signed lower right, ‘E. Potthast’. An exceptionally well executed painting.
Potthast is known for his shore scape genre, landscape paintings, and illustrations. He was one of the significant 19th-century american impressionist artists from cincinnati, which at the time of his birth was a burgeoning art center and a place of refuge for german immigrants, including the Potthast family. He first studied at the mcmicken school of design and at the cincinnati academy, and then went to europe briefly before becoming established in his native city as a lithographer and illustrator.
In 1892, he moved to new york city and worked as a magazine illustrator, and exhibited regularly at the national academy of design, the society of american artists and the salmagundi club. He painted images of central park, new england landscapes, as well as the long island and new england beach scenes for which he is best remembered. His work is included in many major museums in the united states, including the orlando museum of art, the brooklyn museum of art, the cape ann museum, the delaware art museum, the phoenix art museum, among others.
