Description
Francis James Barraud. ‘His Masters Voice’, Lithograph on Canvas
Francis James Barraud (English, 1856 – 1924), ‘His Master’s Voice, 192’. Lithograph on canvas having printed signature. This is the first printed version of the original oil on canvas.
His Master’s Voice was the name of a major british record label created in 1901 by the Gramophone Co. Ltd. The phrase was coined in the late 1890’s as the title of a painting depicting a terrier-mix dog named Nipper listening to a wind-up disc gramophone. In the original, unmodified, 1898 painting, the dog was listening to a cylinder phonograph. The painting was also a famous trademark and logo of the victor talking machine company, later known as RCA Victor. Barraud was first exhibited by the royal academy in 1881, with a portrait of George Rose, his maternal uncle, being one of his compositions. He would become a regular exhibitor at the academy, as well as other institutions, including the institute of painters in oil colours.
Canvas – 20" high x 26" wide. Framed – 25 1/2" high x 31 1/2" wide.
Condition: On original stretcher, later moulding. Craquelure commensurate with age.
