Signed, George Barbier (French, 1882 – 1932). ‘Design for a Fan’. art nouveau art deco Watercolor, ink & pencil painting on paper, signed ‘G. Barbier’ and dated 1912 in ink, lower left.
Barbier was one of the great french illustrators of the early 20th century and was 29 years old when he mounted his first exhibition in 1911. He was subsequently swept to the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theatre and ballet costumes, illustrate books, and create fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the ecole de beaux arts who were nicknamed by vogue, ‘the knights of the bracelet’—a tribute to their fashionable and flamboyant mannerisms and style of dress. During his career he also turned his hand to jewelry, glass and wallpaper design.
In the mid-1920’s he worked with Erte designing sets and costumes for the Foilles Bergere , and in 1929 he wrote the introduction for Ertes’ acclaimed exhibition and achieved mainstream popularity through his regular appearances in i’Illustration magazine. Barbier died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success.

Timepiece movements, lighting and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated.

COLLECTive Hudson does not provide any shipping or packing services. We will happily provide a list of recommended shippers who can provide shipping quotes prior to bidding. Shippers will also be listed on your invoice.
PAYMENT
All invoices totaling over $5,000 to be paid via wire transfer. All jewelry, watches and silver must be paid via wire. All Credit card transactions are subject to a 3.1% CC FEE. Absolutely no credit card transactions over the phone.
Condition: Not examined out of frame, though it presents as very good aside from a minor water stain to lower left corner.
