Description

Signed Abraham Walkowitz, ‘Study of Isadora Duncan’. Watercolor, Ink & Pencil on Paper

Signed Abraham Walkowitz (Russian/American, 1877 – 1967). ‘Study of Isadora Duncan’. Watercolor painting, ink & pencil on paper depicting american modernist dancer Isadora Duncan. Signed lower left in ink and numbered 27 on verso.

Walkowtiz was one of the early American modernists. He traveled to Europe in 1906 to attend the academie julian. Through introductions made by Max Weber, it was here that he met american modern dancer Isadora Duncan in Auguste Rodin’s studio. He went on to produce more than 5,000 drawings of Duncan. His approach to art during these years stemmed from european modernist ideas of abstraction which were slowly infiltrating the american art psyche at the turn of the century.

Like so many artists of the time, he was profoundly influenced by the 1907 memorial exhibition of Cezannes’ work in paris at the salon d’automne. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, as the first generation modernists lost their revolutionary cast, and as american realism gained in favor, he continued his experiments with form and line, especially in his series of Isadora Duncan studies. His dedication to Duncan as a subject extended well past her untimely death in 1927. His work is included in the metropolitan museum of art, the museum of fine art, boston, the museum of modern art, the brooklyn museum, the philadelphia museum of art, among others.
