Portrait of an elegant young lady and very much in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. An 18th-century painter of melodramatic genre, morality lessons, female figures, and portraits whose subjects included Mozart and Benjamin Franklin. No apparent markings

Greuze, born in Burgundy, spent much of his career in Paris under the mentorship of Grandon, a portrait artist. Despite his father’s discouragement, Greuze pursued art, eventually gaining the attention of Parisian nobility and the Royal Academy.Greuze’s works, influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, became increasingly naturalistic, reaching acclaim in the late 1760s.

Although the Academy recognized him as a genre painter, they did not fully acknowledge his portraits and historical scenes. After a period of reduced exhibition due to conflicts with the Academy, Greuze’s popularity declined, and he died impoverished in 1805.
