Desert or Fruit or Salad Set with Gustavsberg Argenta Swedish Bowl, four plates having scalloped rims and silver floral decoration in the art deco style. The mottled green glaze on the stoneware has a matte surface with silver decoration.
Wilhelm Kåge, a prominent Swedish artist, studied at Valand Konstskola in Gothenburg and later in Copenhagen, where he was introduced to modern art through artist Gösta Adrian-Nilsson. He also trained in graphic arts in Munich, beginning his career designing posters for theaters and exhibitions in the 1910s.
In 1917, Kåge’s Lilyblue series debuted at the Liljevalchs Exhibition in Stockholm, leading to his appointment as artistic leader of the Gustavsberg factory. Despite limited experience in ceramics, he infused artistry into functional items, ultimately creating 30 unique lines for the factory.
Kåge introduced the Argenta series in the 1930s, first showcased at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition. Known for its vibrant green glaze, the series also featured red, blue, brown, and celadon variations. In the 1940s, Kåge collaborated with Stig Lindberg, further solidifying his influence on Swedish art pottery.
