Exceptionelle II
Lot 72:
Description
Keywords: French School, 18th-century painting, genre scene, biblical reading, oil on canvas, Greuze, Pieter Martenisie, engraving, domestic interior
Jean-Baptiste Greuze, strong attribution, Reading the Bible, French School, oil on canvas, circa 1750. This composition closely resembles the 1759 engraving by Pieter Franciscus Martenisie, based on a "lost" Greuze original. Related works appear in the Louvre (National Treasure, with a reversed composition) and Brighton and Hove Museum (variant with fewer figures). The present example aligns most directly with the engraved version and captures the sentimentality and domestic virtue typical of Greuze’s mid-18th-century style.
Art: 23 1/2 x 28 1/2 in. (59.7 x 72.4 cm.), Frame: 28 x 33 in. (71.1 x 83.8 cm.) approx
