Lot 50:
Description
Keywords: No reserve, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Art Nouveau Lamps, Leaded Glass shades, Ceiling Fixture, Jugendstil, Leaded Glass Windows, Leaded Glass Pendant, Skylights
Summary:
Amazing, Tag Attached "Tiffany Studios New York". Large dragonfly leaded glass 40" diameter and measuring 52 inches with its carved wood dragonfly design surround. A swarm of dragonflies swril in concentric circles around a large iridescent turtle-back glass jewel. The dragonflies of leaded glass each display smaller cabochon jewels for their bodies and tails.
When this arrived we were afraid to remove it from its protective box and we did not find the tag until we cut open the back of the box and peeked inside. It sat around for almost a year as we tried and failed to find images of other examples in our reference books.
Eventually we stumbled upon an almost identical work held in the Neustadt Collection Museum and the YouTube video which describes their work (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97z7n5pvAZU).
Then we found another related example in a Tripadvisor review of the collection of the New York Lamp Museum and Gardens in Japan(see screenshot below). The Neustadt work has more gold colored glass while our example has more blue-green tones. There are some small cracked pieces, some repair/stabilization around outer circumference and at the center around the turtle-back tile. We did find a tag, but the object is very heavy and scary fragile, not easy to examine and we left it in its nest in the packing. No clue how to estimate this. To be sold without reserve.
Frame: 52 x 52 in. (132.1 x 132.1 cm.), Glass: 40 x 40 in. (101.6 x 101.6 cm.) approx
