NOTE: The verso bears a Galerie Simon (Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler) label, Paris, Rue d’Astorg, a gallery closely associated with Picasso during the early 20th century.

Galerie Simon was the Paris gallery operated by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, one of the most influential art dealers of the early 20th century and the principal champion of Cubism. Established after World War I, Galerie Simon functioned as Kahnweiler’s postwar continuation of his earlier gallery activities, following the confiscation of his pre-war gallery due to his German nationality.

Galerie Simon represented and exhibited many of the most important modern artists of the period, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Paul Klee, and André Masson. Kahnweiler played a pivotal role not only in promoting these artists but also in shaping modern art history through exclusive contracts, scholarly publications, and close personal relationships with the artists he represented.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Galerie Simon was a central hub for avant-garde art in Paris, particularly for works associated with Cubism and post-Cubist modernism. Labels from Galerie Simon are widely regarded as significant provenance markers, indicating early 20th-century gallery circulation and direct association with Kahnweiler’s influential network.
