Summary:
Exhibition Universelle marquetry table depicting France’s accomplishments around the world, made for exhibition at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, where the Eiffel Tower was prominently featured and is depicted in one of the inlaid vignettes on the tabletop.
France distinguished itself during the 19th century through technical progress, and this table celebrates those achievements through richly detailed marquetry scenes. The inlaid vignettes include references to the conquest of Egypt, represented by the pyramids; a steamboat symbolizing the construction of the Suez Canal; depictions of French colonies in North Africa and Indochina; a steam engine representing the Orient Express and its first journey from Paris to Constantinople; and a vignette featuring Gustave Eiffel’s celebrated tower. The pull-out pivot drawers are additionally inlaid with the flags of nations around the world.
Provenance: The Loire Valley Collection.
(Condition: presents well with attractive inlaid decoration and expected surface wear from age and use. Scattered scratches, abrasions, and finish wear visible to the top, some minor veneer and inlay shrinkage. Base shows age-related wear, scuffs, and minor finish loss.
