Summary:
Lilly Martin Spencer oil on canvas portrait painting depicting a seated young woman in a light blue dress. Signed lower left. Housed in an ornate gilt frame. Old frame label verso for R. Elting’s “Art” and “Artists” Emporium, Poughkeepsie, New York.
Lilly Martin Spencer (1822–1902) was an English-born American painter celebrated for her portraits and genre scenes. Raised in Ohio and later active in New York, she achieved unusual professional success for a woman artist of her period and became especially known for works depicting domestic life with warmth and technical refinement. Her paintings were highly popular during her lifetime and remain appreciated today as significant examples of 19th-century American art.
(Presents well overall. Surface shows scattered craquelure, minor grime, and age-related wear. Small spots of surface accretion or discoloration visible in places, including the red drapery area. There appears to be a small rectangular patch or inpainted area in the dark background at right. Canvas has been lined. Frame with general wear, rubbing, and losses consistent with age.)
