René Lalique French Art Deco blue molded glass table clock made in collaboration with Léon Hatot for ATO, circa 1935.
Rare “Normandie” model created for the inaugural voyage of the famed French ocean liner SS Normandie, one of three clock models presented to first class passengers. Circular case with molded capital letters spelling NORMANDIE around the dial, centered by a stylized prow of the liner over a radiating sunburst relief ground. Raised beaded border and sculptural wave form base. Reverse marked “ATO – MADE IN FRANCE, ” with base inscription for Cie Gle Transatlantique French Line. Fitted with original manual wind mechanical movement. A scarce and iconic example of French Art Deco glass and ocean liner design, with Lalique the only glass artist associated with this celebrated project.
(Presents well. Scattered wear consistent with age and use. Multiple condition issues noted to the glass case, including a chipped area with associated cracking at the upper rim near the lettering, and an additional crack with loss visible along the right side of the bezel. Minor edge wear, small flakes, and light surface scratches present in other areas. Base shows expected wear and minor surface marks. Metal back shows age-related tarnish and oxidation. Clock hands and movement present. Working order of the mechanical movement has not been tested and is not guaranteed.)
