Summary:
Jean-Jules Cambos (1828–1917). Parian Bisque Unglazed Porcelain 19th Century sculpture titled Le Retour du Printemps (The Return of Spring), after the celebrated model first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883. The allegorical composition depicts a young woman gracefully lifting a flowing drapery above her head, demonstrating Cambos’ refined treatment of the human figure and flowing drapery. Signed J. Cambos on the integral base.
The first sculpture model was executed in plaster and debuted at the 1883 Salon des Artistes Français and later at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. There is a marble version that was acquired by the city of Castres, the sculptor’s birthplace. This example is an early parian bisque unglazed porcelain casting of the artist’s celebrated composition dating to the19th century.
