Description

Signed Lovis Corinth, Art Nouveau Charcoal & Pencil Drawing German Expressionist, circa 1912

Lovis Corinth (German, 1858-1925), charcoal and pencil painting. Signed upper right, Louis Corinth, April 1912.

One of the greatest of the german expressionists that rose up in the events leading up to world war II, Corinth is notable for many reasons. He bridged the gap between art nouveau and 20th century expressionism, while retaining an original style that could swing from satanic imagery and torture to the other extreme, depicting his wife in a sensitive drawing of love and devotion.

Hitler declared Corinth one of the 100 most degenerate artists of germany in his infamous propaganda art show, attempting to convince the german nation that the previous leaders had led the country down the path of sodom and gomorrah. Corinths’ early works were left undisturbed but those works executed after the artists stroke in 1911 were considered degenerate.
