Description
Vladimir Vasilievich Lebedev (Russian 1891-1967). Woman with Gun. Pastel on paper. Lebedev, was an avante garde painter, a political cartoonist and poster artist, with an experimental style influenced by Russian folk art, futurism and cubism. He became famous for his exceptional illustrations of street life, political, social propaganda and illustrated poems. From 1920-1922, only a few years after the Revolution, Lebedev was hired to create more than five hundred posters, or placards, for the Russian Telegraph Agency and the Department for Agitation and Propaganda. The goal in both cases was to promote the solidarity of the working class. Since both newspapers and literacy were limited, the posters were strategically displayed in empty shop windows, known as rosta windows, which functioned as a crude form of mass communications. In the 1910s and 1920s, he kept company with many of the most influential figures in the radical Soviet avant-garde art movement such as Vladimir Tatlin, Ivan Puni and Vladimir Mayakovsky . Exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. His work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, Library of Congress and others.
