Description

Romain Erte De Tirtoff/Erté (Russian/French, 1892-1990). Lithograph Scheherazade La Nuit. Numbered lower left in pencil, 78/300 and signed lower right in pencil, Erté. Erté is famous for his elegant fashion designs which captured the art deco period in which he worked. His delicate figures and sophisticated designs are instantly recognizable, and his ideas continue to influence fashion into the 21st century. His costumes, program designs, and sets were featured in the many stage performances. In 1925, Louis B. Mayer brought him to Hollywood to design sets and costumes for the silent film Paris, as well as Ben-Hur, among others. Erté continued working throughout his life, designing for revues, ballets, and operas. He experienced a major rebirth of interest in his work during the 1960’s with the art deco revival as he branched out into the realm of limited edition prints, bronzes, and wearable art.
