Description
A rare early scientific instrument: antique floor standing brass Astrolabe and sundial with an elaborately hand engraved surface, with various constellations, astrological symbols serpents and demons and calligraphic script., mounted on tripod base and supported by three lions. .During the Islamic period, in Spain and in Northern Persia, numerous innovations for astronomy and navigation were developed in addition to astrolabes, angular scales and adding circles indicating azimuths on the horizon. The present lot is a very rare example of an astrolabe which was probably produced in Islamic Spain. In excellent condition considering age. 31 in H to top of dial, 22.5 in H x 27 in D
