Description
Johann Mongels Culverhouse oil on canvas, Two Women in Interior, signed and dated 1868, lower left, 29"h x 24"w (sight), 40"h x 33"w (frame). Culverhouse was a native of Rotterdam, Holland who began working in America in 1849 and continued in this country until 1891, chiefly in New York. He must have had a large private patronage because he exhibited only sporadically at the American Art-Union, the national Academy of Design, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
