Frequently attributed to Sonia Delaunay and Jean Patou for Pobery, this tobacco jar and ashtray feature relief decoration with drawings of cigarettes, pipes, and matches. Signed J. Pobery under the base, with the design attributed to Sonia Delaunay.
Delaunay studied at the Academie de la Palette, where Ozenfant and Dunoyer de Segonzac were fellow students. Her early work was influenced by the Fauves; some of her pictures from this period have an expressionist edge that contrasts with the gaiety of her later work.
Her first show was in 1908; she married Robert Delaunay in 1910. She did not exhibit her paintings again in any number until 1953, twelve years after her husband’s death. Although she would not compete with her husband, Sonia painted throughout her life.Delaunay explored how contrasting colors created a sense of movement and simultaneity andwas a central figure in the Orphist movement. Her work, like Electric Prisms, is known for its use of vibrant, clashing colors to create a sense of rhythm and motion. She also applied these principles to various media, including ceramics and textiles.
