Jean-Louis Paguenaud (18761952), *Flamenco Dancer*. Oil on panel, signed lower left and dated 1948.
Provenance: Preserved by the artists descendants to this day.
Originally from Limousin but raised in Algeria, Jean-Louis PAGUENAUD (1876-1952) was trained at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Limoges and at the Academie Julian where he is said to have been a student of Bouguereau. Throughout his life, he maintained a passion for travel and sunny countries: the Basque Country, Spain, Asia, the West Indies, Africa, North Africa, Polynesia, etc.
In 1922, he was appointed official painter of the Navy. Paul Valery nicknamed him "The admiral of painters, the painter of admirals". The Musee de la Marine preserves several works by this brilliant colorist.
