Artist Bio:

Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born on March 4, 1889, in Bordeaux, France, and became a renowned French painter celebrated for his distinctive portrayals of Parisian women in the 1920s. Often referred to as the inventor of the pin-up, Domergue specialized in elegant portraits of Parisian ladies.

He studied at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts and began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Francais at the age of seventeen in 1906. In 1911, he received the second prize for the Prix de Rome and won the gold medal in 1920.

From the 1920s onward, Domergue devoted himself to painting the Parisian lady. Many of these works featured nudes, and he famously described himself as the inventor of the pin-up. Domergues women were characterized by their slender, graceful figures, swanlike necks, and wide, expressive eyes that conveyed a sense of allure and sophistication.
