Signed Erte, ‘Mirror Mirror on the Wall’. Gouache, Watercolor & Ink on Paper, circa 1940
Romain Erte De Tirtoff/Erte (Russian/French, 1892-1990). ‘Mirror Mirror On The Wall’, circa 1940. Original costume design in watercolor, gouache & ink on paper. Signed lower right, and dated 1940 lower left in ink. Provenance: A New Jersey Collection.
Erte is famous for his elegant fashion designs which captured the art deco period in which he worked. His delicate figures and sophisticated designs are instantly recognizable, and his ideas continue to influence fashion into the 21st century. His costumes, program designs, and sets were featured in the many stage performances. In 1925, Louis B. Mayer brought him to hollywood to design sets and costumes for the silent film ‘Paris’, as well as ‘Ben-Hur, ‘ among others. Erte continued working throughout his life, designing for revues, ballets, and operas. He experienced a major rebirth of interest in his work during the 1960’s with the art deco revival as he branched out into the realm of limited edition prints, bronzes, and wearable art.
Sight – 13 1/2" high x 7 1/2" wide. Frame- 15" high x 9" wide.
Condition: Not examined out of frame, though it presents as very good. Recent framing in black lacquer moulding.
