Signed, George E. Hurrell (American, 1904 – 1992). ‘Loretta Young & Tyrone Power’. Gelatin vintage silver print. Signed, dated in ink to verso, and inscribed ‘this photograph was taken in my studio on the sunset strip in Hollywood’, with with the artist’s ink stamp, also on verso.
George Hurrell was a photographer best known for his portraits of hollywood movie stars. Born in Kentucky, Hurrell developed an early interest in painting and photography, eventually studying at the art institute of chicago. Hurrell initially used photography as a way of documenting his paintings, but soon began to use it as his preferred medium. In 1930, he was hired as head of the photography department for mgm. While working at the studio, he was put in charge of capturing the hollywood stars, many of whom became his clientele base when he left the film company to open his own studio. Throughout his career Hurrell photographed numerous celebrities for movie marketing purposes, advertisements, and fashion magazines. His work was exhibited at the museum of modern art, new york, the victoria & albert museum, london, the smithsonian institution, washington, dc, and the getty museum, los angeles.
Sheet – 8 1/2" high x 6 1/2" wide. Frame – 17 1/2" high x 15" wide.
Condition: Minor losses to three corners and the upper right corner with damage caused by removal from glue mount. Remainder of corners having old glue residue. Minor losses to moulding.
