Lou Stoumen (American, 1917 – 1991). ‘Ansel Adams Zoned’. Silver gelatin print, titled lower left in marker. Lightly signed and dated 1989 to lower right.
The zone system of fine art printing was part of a print making technique and teaching series founded by Ansel Adams. This image shows a portrait of Ansel Adams with different gradients from the zone system. Stoumen was a noted photographer, film director, writer and producer. He won two academy awards, the first in 1957 for ‘The True Story of the Civil War’, and the second in 1963 for ‘Black Fox: The Rise & Fall of Adolf Hitler’. After graduating from lehigh university in 1939, he worked as a freelance journalist and photographer in new york. Many of his times square images were published in the 1985 book ‘Times Square: 45 Years of Photographs.’ Stoumen also taught at ucla film school and published ten photography books over the course of his forty-year career.
Sight – 12 1/2" high x 10 1/4" wide. Frame – 20 1/4" high x 16 1/4" wide.
Condition: Not examined out of frame, though it presents as very good. Nicely framed in weighty contemporary moulding with plexi. The moulding and plexiglass having minor wear.
