Description
Signed ‘La Farge’ 19th Century South Seas Exploration. Oil on Canvas
Late 19th century oil painting on canvas, signed lower left, ‘La Farge’. Depicting figures in a tropical setting making offerings to a sculpted diety figure. In period giltwood frame having various marks to verso and brass plate to front, as well as brass medallion to side of moulding, engraved # 1221.
John La Farge (American, 1835 -1910), traveled extensively in Asia and the South Pacific, which inspired his painting during this time. He visited Japan in 1886 as well as the south seas, including Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti and Fiji in 1890 and 1891. These travels are extensively recounted in his book ‘Reminiscences of the South Seas’.
Canvas – 18" high x 33" wide. Frame – 26 1/8" high x 41 1/4" wide.
Condition: Areas of in-painting, one area of abrasion to surface. The frame having various losses.
