Description

Signed D. H. Chiparus (Romanian/French, 1886 – 1947). Art Deco Large Bronze Figural Group, Editions Revreyolis, Paris

D. H. Chiparus (Romanian/French, 1886 – 1947). Antique Art deco patinated bronze figural grouping of a running female figure with three running gazelles. The bronze raised on a veined black marble plinith base, signed ‘D.H. Chiparus’. This sculpture also bears the incised mark for Editions Revreyolis, Paris. As such, this is not one of the many common contemporary later reproductions.

Demétre Chiparus, born in Romania, moves to italy in 1909, and attends the classes of italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he travels to paris to attend the ecole des beaux arts to study under Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. His first works were exhibited at the Salon of 1914. Most of his renowned works were made between 1914 and 1933 and represent the classical manifestation of art deco style in decorative bronze and ivory sculpture. Traditionally, four factors of influence over the creative activity of the artist can be distinguished: Serge Diaghiley’s Ballets Russes, ancient egyptian art and french theatre.

22" high x 33 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" deep. Female figure alone, 19 1/8" high.
