Possibly an original design for a book cover. Barbier is noted for art deco fashion magazine illustration, set and costume design for theatre, film and ballet, and book illustration. He later produced designs for stage sets and theatre costumes, for Folies Bergère, alongside Erte, as well as designs for fabrics, fans and wallpaper.
Aside from his design work, Barbier also wrote influential articles and essays on the topic of art and design. Some of his most renowned works are illustrations for books such as Fetes Galantes by Paul Verlaine and works by Charles Baudelaire.
