Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker who was active in the first half of the 20th century. He is known for his distinctive style that combined elements of Cubism and Surrealism, and for his use of bright, bold colors and geometric shapes. Léger was born in Artois, France in 1881 and studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He was involved in the avant-garde art movements of the time, and his work was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. Léger was also interested in film and made several experimental short films in the 1920s. He died in 1955 in Gif-sur-Yvette, France.
