Peter Paul Ott (Czechslovakian/American, 1895 – 1992). ‘Heading West’, oil painting on board, public works submission for mural commission
This work by wpa artist and supervisor for the chicago wpa, Peter Paul Ott, depicts a town gathering, an indigenous seated figure in the foreground. Possibly a study for a post office mural. Signed lower left , initialed PP Ott as well as stamped with date 1938 to verso.
Born in pilsen, czechoslovakia. He was raised in dresden and studied there at the royal college of fine and applied Arts. He served in world war I and then studied at the austrian state academy of fine arts . In 1924 Ott came to new york city, and by 1928 had received commissions in the area. While in new york he studied at the cooper union and under Alexander Archipenko. He exhibited between 1928 and 1933 at the new york architectural league, the national academy of design, and the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts, as well as at the california palace of the legion of honor in 1929. Ott moved to chicago in 1931. There he taught privately and at local colleges, and served as the chicago supervisor of for the wpa from 1936 to 1939.

Invaluable: All invoicing over $5,000 must be paid via wire transfer. Overseas Payments are to be made via Wire transfer. Payments for jewelry, watches, and silver must also be made via wire transfer. Live Auctioneers: All Invoicing over $5,000 will be paid through ACH or Wire Transfer. Items will not be released until payments are cleared. Credit card transactions are subject to a 3.1% fee. We do not accept credit card transactions over the phone.
We are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Invoices will be sent out on Wednesday morning after the auction. Pick-up is available by appointment only from Wednesday to Sunday, between 11am-4pm.
The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Condition information is available upon request, no later than 24 hours prior to the auction. All lots are offered and sold "as is, " and COLLECTive Hudson will not provide refunds based on condition. Timepiece movements, lighting, and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated.
Condition: Very good. Several areas of in-painting. Area of waterstain to the back.
