Valentine Hugo was born in Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France in 1887. She always had an interest in art and began sketching while in school; mostly ballet dancers and worked closely with the Russian Ballet. Hugo studied painting in Paris where she met Jean Hugo, grandson of famous French author, Victor Hugo. Valentine and Jean married in 1919. Hugo began her career with wood engravings of Romeo and Juliette maquettes by Jean Hugo. In 1926, she attended one of the first surrealist expositions where she met close friend, Paul Elvard.
She was also a costume designer on the set of La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc. She returned to Paris and began her career as a Surrealist. She later divorced her husband in 1932. In the years following she lived, traveled, and worked with Andre Breton, leader of the Surrealists. Through Breton, Hugo met other surrealists, such as Gala and Dali. In 1933, she exhibited with the surrealists in the Salon des Sur Independents. A retrospective of her work was held at the Centre Culturel Thibaud de Champagne, Troyes in 1977. Valentine Hugo is most notable for her portraits and illustrations among pastels and gouaches.

Invaluable: All invoicing over $5,000 must be paid via wire transfer. Overseas Payments are to be made via Wire transfer. Payments for jewelry, watches, and silver must also be made via wire transfer. Live Auctioneers: All Invoicing over $5,000 will be paid through ACH or Wire Transfer. Items will not be released until payments are cleared. Credit card transactions are subject to a 3.1% fee. We do not accept credit card transactions over the phone.
We are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Invoices will be sent out on Wednesday morning after the auction. Pick-up is available by appointment only from Wednesday to Sunday, between 11am-4pm.
The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Condition information is available upon request, no later than 24 hours prior to the auction. All lots are offered and sold "as is, " and COLLECTive Hudson will not provide refunds based on condition. Timepiece movements, lighting, and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated.
