Description
Steichen met the American painter William Merritt Chase in New York in 1900, when he had approached the famous artist for career advice. They became fast friends.Though Steichen originally had aspirations to be a painter, those were soon eclipsed by photography, a hobby he had taken up in 1895. He was first successful as a portrait photographer.His portrait of Chase was also included in a “Special Steichen Supplement” to Camera Work issued in April 1906
