Description
Signed Erte, Original Watercolor, Gouache & Ink Paintings Costume Design, circa 1922
Signed Erte and attributed to Romain Erte De Tirtoff/Erté (Russian/French, 1892-1990). Original costume designs in watercolor, gouache and ink painting on paper, signed lower right, Erté. Verso having stamp for Erte, stamp for Harpers Bazar with pencil notes, dated 6/7/22. Various handwritten notes in ink and pencil, noting various couture items illustrated, etc. Please refer to photos.
Erté is famous for his elegant fashion designs which captured the art deco period in which he worked. His delicate figures and sophisticated designs are instantly recognizable, and his ideas continue to influence fashion into the 21st century. His costumes, program designs, and sets were featured in the many stage performances. In 1925, Louis B. Mayer brought him to hollywood to design sets and costumes for the silent film ‘Paris’, as well as ‘Ben-Hur’, among others. Erté continued working throughout his life, designing for revues, ballets, and operas. He experienced a major rebirth of interest in his work during the 1960’s with the art deco revival as he branched out into the realm of limited edition prints, bronzes, and wearable art. Nicely framed in ebonized/gilt art deco style frame and mat, by Sebastian D’Orsa Ltd (label to verso).
Sheet – 12 3/16" high x 8 13/16" wide. Frame dimensions – 17 1/2" high x 14 1/4" wide.
Condition: Minor toning, very minor crease upper left corner. Old mounting tape to upper edge. Very minor wear to frame.
