Ito Jakuchu (1716–1800) was a prominent Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period. Born in Kyoto to a wealthy family of wholesale grocers, Jakuchu initially inherited his family’s business but later dedicated his life to art after his elder brother took over the business responsibilities.

Jakuchu is known for his intricate and diverse painting techniques. His works are often characterized by meticulous detail, vibrant colors, and an array of subjects, most notably featuring birds, animals, and plants. His artwork showcases both traditional and innovative elements, blending the styles of Chinese literati painting with a uniquely Japanese aesthetic.

One of Jakuchu’s most celebrated works is a collection known as "Colorful Realm of Living Beings" (Doshoku sai-e), composed of 30 hanging scrolls depicting birds, animals, and plant life. The collection is highly regarded for its technical sophistication and depth of naturalistic detail.

Throughout his career, Jakuchu maintained a strong interest in Zen Buddhism, which often found its way into his art. His works display a sense of spiritualism and transcendental philosophy, connecting nature, artistic expression, and spirituality.

Despite his significant talent and the breadth of his work, Jakuchu received relatively little recognition during his lifetime. It wasn’t until the 20th century that his work started to receive the acclaim it deserved, both domestically in Japan and internationally. Today, Jakuchu’s work is highly esteemed and can be found in several museums worldwide, including the Price Collection in Los Angeles and Tokyo’s Imperial Household Agency.
