Description
Chinese Export Gilt Black Lacquer cylinder roll top Desk and Chair. the desk and chair were likely created for export for the european markets that opened up in the late 18th and early19th century
Chinese export gilt black lacquer desk with a cylinder roll top supported on cabriole legs together with a related lacquer chair. The desk is hand painted with calligraphy and images. the translation of the calligraphy seemingly relates to the Qianlong Emperor who ruled until 1799 and also recites a well known chinese poem. Qianlong wrote more poetry in his lifetime than all the poets in the Tang dynasty (618-906) combined, a dynasty known for its Golden age of poetry. Aside from his own art practice, Qianlong combined his passion for collecting art with his role as preserver and restorer of the Chinese cultural heritage.Anyone who can shed further light..please let us know.
