Description

Monumental 19th Century Dore French Bronze and Porcelain Mantel Clock and Candelabra Garniture Set Provenance: Bonhams

Mid 19th Century, the movement marked for Henry Marc and Japy Freres to reverse. Porcelain is probably Sevres(we did not dismantle the clock to check)

Henry Marc Is listed as early as 1800 as a clockmaker and manufacturer. His name appears on many fine mantel and carriage clocks, but it’s likely that towards the end of the 19th Century, the firm was mainly a retailer. This explains the markings for Japy Freres, There are so many JAPY clocks still around because Frédéric Japy (1749-1812) was a pioneer in the industrialization of not only clocks, but of manufacturing in general. An imaginative inventor of all sorts of machines, he began his career as a watchmaker.
