Signed Christina Varga Oil on Canvas Painting
The 13th Gate Signed Christina Varga Oil on Canvas Painting.
Varga blazed New York City’s underground art arenas in the late 1990’s by organizing and publicizing over 30 solo guerrilla-style exhibitions in nightclubs, theaters, restaurants, small non-profit spaces and outdoor events. These led to commissioned projects including commisioned extra terrestrial alien themed works for the 1999 MTV Movie Awards at Barker Hangar in Los Angeles, California, a three room ceiling mural for the nightclub Chaos on East Houston Street in New York City, a restaurant makeover at Asia Roma in Tribeca, NY.
In 1999 Varga began a project which transformed three doors into life-sized depictions of Buddha, Jesus and Mohammed (pbuh). The Triptych, a neo-Byzantine work in oil paint, hand cut wooden mosaics, sand, mica and varnish is an homage to world religion. It was displayed for the first time at LadyFest East in 2002, publicly exhibited at Bard College during the 2005 Resurgence Conference on Earth & Religion, and was on display at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in the 2005/06 winter season. The fourth work in this neo-Byzantine style is a self-portrait depicting the biblical figure known as the ‘Woman Clothed by the Sun’ from the Book of Revelations. This work has been in progress since 2002 and can be seen in detail here.
Currently Christina Varga is in the throes of ‘pixelation’ – a technique that chops various media into rough squares and incorporates these into mixed media orchestrations much like mosaic. This technique harkens to the wood mosaic cutouts in the Triptych, expanding upon it and includes materials such as canvas, small mosaic tiles, corrugated cardboard, various papers, burlap, brocade fabrics and more.
