Signed Harari Pastel on Paper

Hananiah Harari (b. 1912) was an American Modernist artist whose work defies easy categorization. Harari synthesized elements of Cubism, Constructivism, and Expressionism while often creating recognizable imagery that reflected his direct experience. Inspired by his conviction that "art … must feed upon, digest, and reveal life, " Harari’s work was unified by a humanist vision and a sense of humor about the nature of human experience. Born in Rochester, New York, he studied at the Memorial Art Gallery and the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, New York. He spent time in Paris from 1932-34, where he trained in the ateliers of the Cubist masters André Lhote, Fernand Léger, and Marcel Gromaire, and developed a style that merged a fluent Cubist vocabulary with an approach influenced by the style of Matisse. In 1937, Harari joined the American Abstract Artists group. Along with members Rosalind Bengelsdorf and Byron Browne, he shared an interest in creating nature-based abstractions. In the decades that followed, Harari worked in a versatile and wide-ranging style, combining elements of Cubism, biomorphic and geometric abstraction, and Surrealism. His subjects included the city, portraits, and images reflecting his political convictions
