Description
1,000 Year old Monumental Ancient Southeast Asian Stone Temple Guardian Demon Head
1,000 Year old Monumental Ancient Southeast Asian (Vietnamese?) Stone Temple Guardian Demon Head relief carved sandstone, architectural element carved with repeating rows of balls and gadroons forming a face, mounted to black laminate base, 28"high x 16"wide x 8"deep (stone), 38"high with base approx.
The size and grandeur of this stone head suggest that it was likely used as a guardian at a temple or other important religious site. The demon’s fearsome appearance would have served to protect the temple and its occupants from harm, while also acting as a symbol of the power and authority of the gods. The style of the head is characteristic of Southeast Asian art, with its elongated, slender features and elaborate headdress. This head is a true masterpiece of ancient sculpture and a testament to the artistic skills and cultural traditions of the people of Southeast Asia in the 12th century.
Provenance: The Collection of visual artist Lewis Stein, NYC
