Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was a German-born American editorial cartoonist dubbed the "father of the American cartoon." He rose to prominence with his influential illustrations in Harper’s Weekly, especially during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Nast’s work played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, notably in exposing the corruption of "Boss" Tweed and the Tammany Hall political machine in New York. Additionally, he’s credited with popularizing the modern image of Santa Claus, and while he didn’t originate symbols like the Democratic donkey, the Republican elephant, or Uncle Sam, his renditions deeply ingrained them in American culture. Whether through the jolly figure of Santa or the dignified representation of Columbia as the U.S.’s spirit, Nast’s iconic imagery has left an indelible mark on the nation’s consciousness.
