The Otto Prutscher, Weiner Werkstatte Austrian wine goblet (attributed to Otto Prutscher)
Otto Prutscher, a renowned figure in design, was born in Vienna and received his education under the guidance of Josef Hoffmann at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Vienna School for Applied Art). He embarked on a diverse career path, working as an architect, decorator, and designer for Hoffmann at the Wiener Werkstätte in Vienna, as well as collaborating with several other manufacturers. His artistic contributions extended across various disciplines, including textiles, glass, leatherwork, metalwork, and furniture, all of which he skillfully designed for the workshops.
One of Prutscher’s remarkable achievements was his glassware designs for the Wiener Werkstätte, characterized by the use of the cameo process. This innovative technique involved encasing a clear glass object with a layer of colored glass. Subsequently, the colored glass would be selectively cut or polished away, revealing the exquisite clear glass beneath. Prutscher’s glass designs prominently featured the geometric motifs favored by his mentor, Josef Hoffmann, whose works are also showcased alongside Prutscher’s creations.
