Victorian era walnut Heywood brothers signed bentwood executive swivel desk chair.

Heywood Brothers & Company: Founded in 1826 by Walter Heywood, it initially made wooden chairs and later became a significant producer of rattan furniture.

Wakefield Rattan Company: Founded by Cyrus Wakefield in 1855, this company also started with rattan furniture. Cyrus Wakefield purchased discarded rattan from shipyards in Boston and began making rattan furniture, which quickly gained popularity.

In 1897, the two companies merged to become the Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company. By the turn of the century, the company was the largest manufacturer of rattan furniture.

In 1921, the company name was changed to Heywood-Wakefield Company. Throughout the 20th century, especially in the 1930s to the 1950s, the company was well-known for its modernist, streamlined wooden furniture, quite a departure from its rattan origins.

So, before becoming Heywood-Wakefield, the origins of the company were in the separate entities of Heywood Brothers & Company and the Wakefield Rattan Company, both of which primarily dealt with rattan furniture.
