Signed Johann Berthelsen Oil on Canvas Painting of Empire State Under Snow

Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972) was an American artist renowned for his impressionistic depictions of New York City streetscapes, particularly capturing the essence of the city during the early to mid-20th century. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Berthelsen immigrated to the United States with his family at an early age, settling in Chicago.

Berthelsen’s artistic journey began in the realm of music. He was a talented singer and initially pursued a career in opera, which led him to the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music. However, his artistic inclinations soon shifted towards painting, influenced by his interaction with various artists and exposure to different art forms.

His art is characterized by a unique blend of impressionism and realism, with a focus on urban landscapes. Berthelsen was particularly captivated by New York City, which served as the primary subject for many of his works. He skillfully captured the vibrancy and dynamism of the city, often depicting iconic landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and Fifth Avenue under various atmospheric conditions. His paintings of New York City are celebrated for their ability to evoke the mood and feel of the city, with particular emphasis on the interplay of light and shadow.

Despite his focus on urban scenes, Berthelsen also painted serene landscapes and seascapes, showing his versatility as an artist. He was skilled in using oil as his primary medium, which allowed him to create rich textures and nuanced color palettes.

Berthelsen’s work gained considerable recognition during his lifetime and continues to be celebrated posthumously. His paintings are part of several major collections and have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums. As an artist, Johann Berthelsen contributed significantly to the American art scene, leaving a lasting legacy through his captivating portrayals of New York City.
