Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972) was an American artist renowned for his impressionistic depictions of New York City streetscapes, particularly capturing the essence of the city during the early to mid-20th century. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Berthelsen immigrated to the United States with his family at an early age, settling in Chicago.
Berthelsen’s artistic journey began in the realm of music. He was a talented singer and initially pursued a career in opera, which led him to the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music. However, his artistic inclinations soon shifted towards painting, influenced by his interaction with various artists and exposure to different art forms.
His art is characterized by a unique blend of impressionism and realism, with a focus on urban landscapes. Berthelsen was particularly captivated by New York City, which served as the primary subject for many of his works.
