Description

Signed Guandallini Cententa Oil on Canvas Painting "Dance of the Cupids, Proserpina", 1838

A magnificent totally original and untouched oil on canvas painting by the extraordinarily rare to find early to mid 19th Century Italian School artist Guandallini Cententa . The work is after the original painting by Francesco Albani Francesco Albani (Italian, Bologna 1578–1660 Bologna).

As a classically themed inspiration of works of art; the abduction of Proserpine has been depicted by several well known classical artists such as Hans von Aachen (1587) and also depicted in sculpture works; probably most notably by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Proserpine is an ancient Roman goddess whose cult, myths and mysteries were combined from those of Libera, an early Roman goddess of wine. The originally Roman goddess Libera was daughter of the agricultural goddess Ceres and wife to Liber, god of wine and freedom.

Proserpina is associated with the underworld realm and with the springtime growth of crops and the cycle of life, death and rebirth or renewal. Central myths associated with this goddess were her forcible abduction by the god of the underworld, her mother’s search for her and her eventual but temporary restoration to the world above were inspiration of works in Roman and later art and literature. In particular, Proserpina’s seizure by the god of the Underworld usually described as the Rape of Proserpina, or of Persephone – has offered dramatic subject matter for Renaissance and later sculptors and painters.

Painted in 1838 and signed by the artist the canvas has not been touched and shows no indication of any intervention whatsoever making it an extremely rare example of renaissance style influenced 19th century Italian School art. We think that the painting was most likely commissioned and the frame which is original to the piece has the marking of an old frame and art supplier.
