Signed Jessie Hazel Botke Watercolor Gouache Painting on Paper
Jessie Hazel Arms Botke (1883-1971) was an esteemed American artist, renowned for her contributions to the California school of Impressionism. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she developed a distinctive style characterized by exotic and ornately decorated bird studies, often featuring a wide variety of birds including white peacocks, blue peacocks, cockatoos, ducks, swans, geese, pheasants, and toucans.
Botke’s artistic journey included formal training at the Chicago Art Institute during 1897-98 and again from 1902 to 1905. Her artistic oeuvre extends beyond bird studies to include florals, landscapes, murals, Indian figures, and genre scenes. She typically painted in oil but was also proficient in watercolor and gouache.
