Signed photographic print of the Washington Monument in scaffolding, designed by architect Michael Graves for a 1999-2000 renovation. Signed on verso by Colin Winterbottom, titled "Washington Monument with Scaffolding" and dated 1999.

Originally commissioned for a 1999-2000 renovation, the stylish scaffolding was meant to dress up the construction but keep the look of the monument. The following is summarized from his site: Colin Winterbottom’s photography is described as romantic, dramatic, and serene, offering a fresh perspective on Washington D.C. by emphasizing textures and dynamic compositions. He focuses on how places feel rather than just their appearance, using a combination of analog and digital methods. Winterbottom’s work includes a variety of projects, notably historic preservation sites like the Washington Monument scaffolding and the National Cathedral after the 2011 earthquake. His personal projects led to opportunities to photograph historic institutions such as the US Supreme Court and St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Artist Bio: Winterbottom has received several fellowships and his work has been recognized in galleries, the press, and by the Smithsonian’s Photographic History Collection. His photography is held in numerous public and private collections and has been featured in various publications.

Raised in the Washington suburbs, he has lived in the city for over twenty years. Winterbottom holds a BA in economics and an MA in philosophy and social policy. Prior to becoming a full-time photographer, he spent eight years as a research assistant at the Urban Institute.
