Antique drawing after John Flaxman, featuring Illustrations of the Divine Comedy
Artist Bio: During a seven-year study trip to Italy from 1787, Flaxman developed a new style of outline drawings in which he illustrated famous poetic works by Homer and Aeschylus for private clients. In 1793 he made drawings for Homer’s Iliad, followed in 1795 by drawings for the Odyssey, which were reproduced as copperplate engravings by Tommaso Piroli and William Blake and published in Italy, France and Great Britain. The drawing presented here is probably a copy of the copperplate engravings and were made by an artist from the first half of the 19th century.
