Agnes Hart (1912-1979) was an American abstract artist born in Meridan, Connecticut. She studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida and at Iowa State University with Josef Presser, Paul Burlin and Lucile Blanch. She also studied printmaking with Reginald Neal. Hart’s early works were WPA-style social realism, but developed into Cubist urban landscape and still life painting. She became best known for her later Abstract Expressionist-influenced work. After her first solo exhibition at the RoKo Gallery in New York City in 1948, she continued to have numerous solo shows primarily in Woodstock in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Her many group shows credits include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Butler Art Institute, Chicago Art Institute, National Academy of Design, and Berkshire Art Association. In 1977 Hart was invited by President Jimmy Carter to the White House Reception for Outstanding Woman of America.
