Museum Piece…16th Century Altar Front for Ordre du Saint-Esprit. Removed from a French Renaissance Knights Meeting Hall and Chapel. during the revolution and rediscovered. Wood carved fine relief that is formerly gilded and polychrome with the dove symbolizing the Order of the Holy Spirit. Dating back to circa 1600 and showcases French royal history of a knight’s monastery hostel altar front piece.

The French Order of Chivalry was founded by Henry III of France in 1578.(an image of King Henry wearing the cross of the order is attached) Today, it is a dynastic order under the House of France. Holy Spirit in a cloud of foliage scrolls, shells in the spandrels. This piece was probably the Altar antipendium in the hotel/meeting hall of the Knights of the Holy Spirit. The Order of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Ordre du Saint-Esprit, was a French order of chivalry founded by Henry III of France in 1578. It was an honorific order that was Catholic and dynastic under the House of France. The king of France awarded the order to members chosen from aristocrats who were at least four degrees of noble and already members of the Order of Saint Michael. Members were expected to perform certain duties. They were also given a cross of the order by the king to wear
