John Francois Kaufman "Columbus at the Court of Isabella ", Historic Romantic style oil on canvas painting, circa 1900, signed lower left.

Kaufman’s studio was in Carnegie Hall. The artist was tried for heresy in 1919 or 1920 at the Jefferson Courthouse, now the Jefferson Library in Greenwich Village. He had painted a scene of the wedding at Cana, depicting Christ surrounded by NYC politicians. He was acquitted but left the country and returned to Europe and was active in Switzerland thereafter.
