Important George Inness (1825-1894), *Autumn Light* this 19th-century oil painting on panel depicts a serene overcast early fall landscape with a pond reflecting the autumn light. Signed lower right in good antique frame with old plaque. this is an excellent example, good signature and with the original old plaque

Born on a farm near Newburgh, New York, George Inness had post-Civil War recognition for paintings that were unique in structure and atmosphere and that turned away from the dramatic, panoramic Hudson River School of painting to a quieter, tonalist expression of poetry in nature. Among the Americans at Barbizon, France, he was the leading painter of that movement of early plein-air landscape

The surface is stable with areas of fine craquelure consistent with age. The panel is secure and shows no evidence of warping or major structural instability.

Minor abrasions and small surface losses are visible, particularly along the lower register. Scattered accretions are present. The varnish has aged and shows a slight yellowing, though it remains even overall.

The period gilt frame is elaborate and exhibits wear, including chipping, losses to the ornamentation, and rubbing consistent with age. It remains structurally sound.

UV Light Examination

Under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces with a consistent bluish haze, typical of natural aged varnish. Several localized areas of purplish fluorescence are visible in the sky and foreground, suggesting past retouching or inpainting. These interventions appear limited and do not detract significantly from the overall aesthetic integrity of the work.

Overall, the painting remains in good condition for its age, with expected surface wear and evidence of past restorations. It retains strong aesthetic presence and stability.
